Things to know from this week and upcoming events:

With the money donated so far toward the big ticket Auction Basket item, my co-workers, Mrs. Wilkinson and Mrs. Lomas, bargain-shoppers extraordinaire, did a wonderful job bargain hunting and were able to purchase a 32” Flat Screen TV and a Blue Ray Disc DVD player for our class Auction Basket! We have received several tickets to various family entertainment venues including a $15 Gift Card to Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream Parlor, 2 large Dominoes Pizzas, 2 tickets to the Lakewood Playhouse toward a play, 4 tickets to the Pacific Science Center Exhibit Hall, and 6 tickets to the Hands On Children's Museum in Olympia. We also have a Sunbeam Theater Style Popcorn Maker, a 40 pkg. box of Orville Redenbacher microwave popcorn, a DVD and a few board games. Thank you to those who have donated toward the big ticket item and/or donated other basket items already! If you would still like to donate we could use more games, DVDs or cash to go towards gift cards to Best Buy, Blockbuster, or other family entertainment items.
The class enjoyed the play, “The Tortoise and the Hare” at Olympia Family Theater on Monday, March 5^th. Thank you to all of the parent drivers – you are appreciated!

**2 HOUR LATE START on Thursday, March 1st due to icy road conditions. Classes start at 10: 25 a.m.**
Those students who passed the Feb. 27th Spelling List 20 Pre-Test include: Ryann, Elizabeth, Braden, Jarret, Bailey, Ethan, and Daniel - Way to Go!
Pictures including some from the Skate-A-Thon and other classroom activities will be posted soon.
5^th Graders have a History Test (Ch. 11) on Thursday. They may use their notes.
4th Graders did a wonderful job on their mini-reports on Ch. 10 focusing on the American Revolutionary War time period.
Check the TV or internet newscast or radio for weather updates and any school delays or closures due to snow storms.
A flyer was sent home with your child this week containing a detailed wish list of the class auction basket items (family entertainment is the theme) as well as a request for donation money toward a big ticket item. We have received money toward the big ticket item: a Wii or other type of entertainment game console or a Flat-Screen TV and if possible, a DVD player; and a popcorn popper, microwave popcorn, board game, and a DVD movie. What we really could use is more cash/check donations toward the big ticket item. We have also received several tickets to various family entertainment venues including 2 large Dominoes Pizzas, 2 tickets to the Lakewood Playhouse toward a play, 4 tickets to the Pacific Science Center Exhibit Hall, and 6 tickets to the Hands On Children's Museum in Olympia. Thank you to those of you who have donated money or items already!
Please send in the permission slip and the $5.00 for the field trip to see the play, “The Tortoise and the Hare” at Olympia Family Theater on Monday, March 5^th, and an additional $5.00 for any siblings attending and for yourself if you are driving. If you are a driver, please also bring some change for metered parking near the theater. I will help with the cost of parking if needed. I will confirm with all the parent drivers soon on your availability to drive and seats in your vehicle. Students should bring a lunch for that day and we will eat in the classroom prior to leaving. Parent Drivers should plan to be up in the classroom by 11:45 a.m. Let me know if your child will be staying home that day if they are not participating.

I hope you had a wonderful 3-day weekend and day off from school on Monday, Feb. 20th, for Presidents Day!

For this week:

NO SPELLING this week due to No School on Monday, Feb. 20th, 2012.
4th Graders have History Mini-Report Rough Drafts due on Tuesday, Feb. 21st. Final Drafts will be due on Thursday, Feb. 23rd (unless more time is needed).
Math Test 7 for both 4th & 5th Graders will be Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 21st & 22nd, and Open Book - students may use workbook pages recently covered in class.
A flyer with a "wish-list" for our 4th/5th Gr. Auction Basket will be sent home this week. The theme is "Family Entertainment" and we could use a variety of items such as games, snacks, tickets to plays, movie theaters, the zoo, bowling gift certificates, as well as cash or check donations to go toward a big item such as a Wii or other gaming device or a DVD player - see the flyer for more details. The auction will be a western theme and if you have any "western-style" items to help for decorating the gym please bring them in to the EVCS School Office. Thank you!
As a class we have the opportunity to go see a play in Olympia. A note with details will be sent home soon. The date will be Monday, March 5th and the cost is $5.00. I will contact parents soon to find out who will be available and interested in driving and chaperoning. It should be fun!

Week of Feb. 13-17, 2012

News for this week:

Students who passed the List 19 Spelling Pre-Test are: Ryann, Mikayla, Ethan, Adam, Kohlten, Daniel, Elizabeth and Braden - way to go!
Tuesday students can bring Valentine's Day cards and treats to share if they wish while we watch a movie and we will give cards and a craft Bear magnet to their Little Brothers/Sisters.
5th Graders had a History Test this week and 4th Graders had an open book History Test this week.
4th Graders have a History Mini-Report they will be working on which they received information on this week. Students will be doing research on a topic from Ch. 10 in their History books and writing a mini-report. The Rough Draft is due Tuesday, February 22nd, and the Final Draft will be due on Thursday, February 24th. A copy of the guidelines will be sent home Friday.
There will be NO SPELLING next week due to no school on Monday.
Congratulations to all of the Gift Card winners and most laps walked or skated recently! Our students as a school raised over $5,000.00!!!
There will be no school on Monday, February 20th due to the Presidents Day Holiday. We will have school on Tuesday, February 21st, 2012.

The Skate-A-Thon was a fun event to be a part of! For those students who have sponsors who pledged - the money is due by Feb. 13th. Please turn in collected pledges to me this week or by Feb. 13th at the latest. Thank you again to all of the parents who drove/counted laps!

Students who passed the Spelling List 17 Pre-Test are: Ryann, Elizabeth, Kohlten, Ethan and Alexa - way to go!
Grades for the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 3, and some grades for the week of Jan. 23-27 will be entered into the online gradebook Engrade by the end of this week or the upcoming weekend - thanks for your patience.
For Valentine's Day on Tuesday, February 14th we will have a time to pass out Valentine's Day Cards/treats to classmates, eat treats and watch a short movie. A class list will be sent home before February 14th with student names. Students may bring other food items to share also.

January was a busy month and we had quite a week gone from school with the snow storm and power outages! My house finally had power restored late Wed. Nt., Jan. 25th. I was and still am so thankful! A week without electrical power was challenging! Thankfully we had a generator, wood stove, etc., and of course many offers of help which was appreciated. Our God is an awesome God who provided for our needs and I pray He continues to meet all of your needs!

Last week we finished up 2nd Quarter and report cards were sent home on Friday, January 27th. This week we are starting 3rd Quarter. Information and events for this week:

Some grades from assignments from the week of Jan. 23rd-30th still are not entered – they will be entered online this weekend or this coming week, along with grades from assignments from this week.
Both grades had a Language 5 Test Monday and Tuesday of this week. Students were able to use their Study Guide and Language Workbook pages to study and refer to when taking their test on Jan. 30th-31st.
5th Graders had a unit History Test 8 on Ch. 1-9 on Wed. and Thurs., Feb. 1st-2nd.
Both grades had a pop quiz and pop test this week in Math. Quiz 6 was given Wed., Feb. 1st and Test 6 was given on Thurs., Feb. 2nd, and will be continued on Monday, Feb. 6th. Students were allowed to use their workbook pages if needed. They have been doing well in most areas of math recently and I am confident they are/were ready to take the quiz and test. Redos on many quizzes and tests have been allowed, and we are working on trying to lessen the redos and catch errors before turning in quizzes and tests.
On Monday, February 6th, the 5th Graders will have a Pizza Party with Mrs. Rivard during their History time!
4th Graders will have a History project coming up - more information will be posted on this blog and will also be sent home with students as soon as I have the details ready for the project.
The following students passed the Spelling List 16 Pre-Test: Ryann, Mikayla, Ethan, Jarrett, Kohlten and Alexa - way to go!
Congratulations to Braden for winning 1st place in the Intermediate 75 Division recently at the Washington State Folkstyle Wrestling Championships held in Spokane!
Friday we went to Joint Base Lewis McChord for the Skate-A-Thon. All those who participated in the skating, lap counting and driving did a terrific job! Fantastic skating students! And...a big thank you to all of the parent drivers and lap counters for helping!
Happy Birthday in December to Bailey and in February to Ethan!

Welcome Back to school! What a week with all the snow and power outages! Some of you may still be without power in your homes (I am!), yet we have a God who has more than enough power to keep us safe and provide for our daily needs. I trust He has done this for you and still is! For this week:

Friday, January 27th is a half-day due to Records Day. No lunch at school. This is the end of 2nd Quarter.
Students who passed the List 15 Spelling Pre-Test include: Ethan, Kohlten, Elizabeth, McKenzie, Faith, Daniel, Mikayla, Ryann, and Jarrett - way to go!
Both grades will have a Language Test the following week and a Study Guide will be sent home by the end of this week.
4th Graders will have a short research report in history on a famous person or event from Ch. 10 in their history book. More details will be sent home soon.
We will have a kick-off assembly Tuesday afternoon for the Skate-A-Thon and National School Choice Week.
Feb. 3rd, will be the day we go to Joint Base Lewis-Mchord for the Skate-A-Thon. Please let me know if your child will be staying home if they are not attending the Skate-A-Thon. Thank you to the parents/guardians who turned in forms to drive and count laps. I will contact you soon to confirm driving availability and details for seats in your vehicle.

I hope you all enjoyed Monday off for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday this past weekend. Things to note for this week:

NO SCHOOL ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 17TH, due to snow/icy roads.

The Spelling List 15 Pre-Test which was scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 17th will be post-poned until next week Monday, Jan. 23rd since there is no school Tues., Wed., Thurs. and Friday, Jan. 17th - 20th, due to the snow and icy roads.
Both grades will have a language test coming up after next week.
Check the EVCS web site also for emergency closures or delays - we follow Yelm School District - if they close or if they have a late start - EVCS does the same.

Week of Jan. 9-13, 2011

We are getting back into the regular routine for school. We have had quizzes and regular lessons but not always tests for each chapter or unit for the core subjects of math, language, science and history, during the busier holiday season in later November and through December and into early January. We will have a language test for both grades coming up next week or the following week. More information will be sent home before the language test. We will not have a science test for both grades for the most recent unit on birds, as we have focused on quizzes and activity sheets as well as regular lessons and other activities on birds. The 4th graders will not have a history test but have also focused on quizzes, skill sheets and regular lessons. They will have a test on the next unit which will cover the Revolutionary War period of American history, and will have a project to go along with it - more information will be given to students before any projects are assigned. 5th graders recently had a history test this week on Wednesday and other projects, activities, and regular lessons as assigned by Mrs. Rivard. We are doing regular reading comprehension stories throughout the week and Bible lessons, and occasional art projects. Students seem to thoroughly enjoy PE on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, library on Monday and Wednesday mornings, and chapel on Tuesday afternoons. Writing projects are incorporated into the other subjects and occasional Free Write responses or other projects are assigned. In the spring we will be doing health in place of science, and a unit on Washington State History for the 4th graders.

To note for this week:

Both 4th and 5th Graders have a math test on Thursday and will finish it on Friday, Jan. 12th and 13th. A Study Guide will be sent home by Wednesday.
The following students passed the Spelling List 14 Pre-Test on Monday and won't need to take the Friday Post-Test: Daniel, Alexa, Jarrett, Ryann, Elizabeth, Kohlten, Ethan, and Braden - way to go!
Spelling List 15 will be sent home this Friday for next week. The Pre-Test will be on Tuesday, Jan. 17th (no school on Monday).
Sponsor forms for the upcoming Skate-A-Thon for Feb. 3rd were sent home this week and Parent Driver and Lap Counter forms were also sent home. If you are able to drive and count laps please send in the form with the required information and return it with your child to school no later than Friday, Jan. 13th so that the forms can be turned in for clearance to enter the military post where the Skate-A-Thon will be held.
If you're able to send in kleenex boxes it would be appreciated as we went through our supply this fall. Thanks to those of you who have already sent in kleenex boxes!
Some students still need to bring in their emergency kit bags for the classroom - contact me if you need to find out specific items to bring in for your child.
If your child will be missing school due to an appt. or illness, please contact the school and leave a message. I will leave their school books and assignment sheet for any make-up work to be picked up by the end of the school day and students can bring in their work when they return.
As a class we will also be doing projects for our Country Days country which is Norway. I have some curriculum items and projects that I'll be introducing and I am open to ideas from parents - let me know if you have ideas to share.
For the Spring Auction the 4th/5th Grade Basket theme is Family Entertainment. I would like to include in the basket some family entertainment items that would include tickets to movies, plays, etc., as well as a big ticket item a family could have to use at home such as a Wii or similar game console with games, perhaps 1 or more board games for different ages, and also some snack items such as popcorn, candy, etc. I will send home a note in your child's communication envelope with more details. If you are able to donate any items or cash toward the big ticket item, please let me know - thank you!
No School next week Monday, January 16th, due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and time off from school! I have posted some pictures from November and December below including: making crafts, our class Christmas party, meeting with younger brothers/sisters to share Christmas cards, and being seated before performing our songs for the Christmas program. You all did such a wonderful job! Study for Spelling List 13 - we will do the Pre-Test on Tuesday, January 3rd and the Post-Test on January 6th. We will be starting up again with all subjects. Hope you've had a chance to do some reading over the Christmas vacation as well as enjoying time with family!
Looking forward to a Happy New Year and seeing you in January 2012!

This is our final week of school before Christmas Break. Graded papers from the week of Nov. 30th-Dec. 2nd and from the beginning of this week: Dec. 12-16, 2011, will be sent home by the end of this week. Important information:

There will be no spelling this week. I will send home the spelling words for the first week in January, later this week so students will have the entire Christmas Break to study the next list.
Dec. 16th is a half day with a 12:00 p.m. dismissal and no lunch. We will have a short class Christmas party (the last half hour from approx. 11:30 - 12:00) before dismissal. Return the form sent home last week if you will be sending any snacks with your child for Dec. 16th. We will eat snacks and watch a Christmas movie before we dismiss at noon.
Wed. and Thurs., Dec. 14th-15th, in the afternoons we have rehearsals for the Christmas program and on the morning of Dec. 16th, we have the dress rehearsal, before our class party the last half hour that day. Please schedule any dr. appts. for other times if at all possible, so your child can be here for those rehearsals.
Dec. 16th at 7:00 p.m. is our school Christmas program with the Snowman Shop and Bazaar open at 5:00 p.m. and also after the program. It should be a fun time for all and your children have done a wonderful job practicing their Christmas songs!

I hope all of you had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving! It's good to have time with family and friends and to reflect on all we have to be thankful for.

Grades from the past two weeks have been entered for most of the work done and I will finish up during this week with entering a few more grades into Engrade - the online gradebook. Graded papers from the weeks of Nov. 14-18 and Nov. 21-23 will be sent home this week.

A Study Guide for Test 3 in Science will be sent home on Tuesday instead of Monday. The test will be on Wed. and we will finish it on Thurs., Nov. 29th & 30th. It will be a modified test and students will be able to use their notes.
Dec. 2nd - Vision screening throughout the day.
Students who passed the Spelling List 11 Pre-Test are: Alexa, Jarrett, Elizabeth, Ryann, Braden, Ethan and Kohlten. Way to go!

Week of Nov. 21-23, 2011

This is Thanksgiving Week and a short 3-day week. See below for highlights:

Monday, Nov. 21st, 5th Grade History - Reports and Presentations Due.
Tuesday, Nov. 22nd, 4th Grade History Test. You may use your notes and it will not be as long as previous tests. We have PE in the afternoon.
Wednesday, Nov. 23rd - Thanksgiving-themed snacks party - we will start our snacks party before lunch and continue it after lunch, including watching a movie and a Word Search. Students also have PE in the afternoon. EVCS will have an early dismissal one hour early at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
One day during this week we will do a Thanksgiving-themed craft for Art.
Tests: Students in both grades had a modified test in math the end of last week, as well as the 5th graders had a modified test in language, and 4th graders will have their tests in language and history this week. We will review plants and related subjects in Ch. 3 in science for both 4th and 5th graders, and have a modified test after Thanksgiving, on Wednesday, November 30th, 2011.
Spelling List 11 will be sent home by Tuesday of this week for students to study over the weekend. Pre-Test for Spelling List 11 will be Monday, Nov. 28th.
Papers and tests from the week of Nov. 14-18 and from this week of Nov. 21-23 will be graded over the Thanksgiving weekend and sent home the last week of November.
It was great to meet with each and every one of the parents for conferences. Thank you for raising such wonderful children!

Week of Nov. 14-18, 2011

We have Conference Week and half days this week Wed.-Friday, Nov. 16-18, and next week we will not have school Thurs. and Friday, Nov. 24-25 for Thanksgiving Break. We will have a modified schedule meaning that we will focus on having most subjects throughout the next two weeks yet we may do some subjects at a different time of the day. 5th graders will still meet for history with Mrs. Rivard. Things to note for this week and for next week:

No Spelling - we will start up again the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 2. A new list will be sent home before school is out for Thanksgiving Break.
Nov. 14th - School logo order forms due in the office - more colors available also.
Nov. 15th - Operation Christmas Child shoebox items collected. I have bought some items specifically for a boy with the Car Toys theme on some of the items. Here is what has been bought so far: toothbrush, toothpaste, school supplies including colored pencils, crayons, pencils, pencil sharpener, small tablet, small coloring book, jumprope, harmonica, yo-yo, comb and brush set, Christmas candy, and a few other items. If you have any additional items you would like to add for this box, or if you have items you would like to donate toward a shoebox for a girl, please send the items in with your child no later than this Tuesday, Nov. 15th.
Graded papers from the week of Nov. 7-10 will be sent home the end of this week and graded papers from this week of Nov. 14-18 will be sent home after Thanksgiving with graded papers and any tests from that week and from the week of Nov. 21-23, 2011. Grades will be entered into the 2nd Quarter online gradebook on Engrade (GP2 for Grading Period 2) by the end of Thanksgiving weekend. Contact me if you need assistance checking your child's grades online.
By the end of this week I will send home information for our "Thanksgiving-themed snacks" class party - please sign up for one or more items if you are able to send in any items from the list that will be sent home, for the class party.
See pictures below of our school Veteran's Day Assembly. It was a wonderful assembly with a color guard of local active duty military soldiers, veterans, and members of our school singing songs, saying the pledge and prayer, reading a veteran's essay, and our class reciting The American's Creed. All those involved did a fantastic job!

This week we have a short week - no school on Friday, Nov. 11th, for Veteran's Day. Here are upcoming events or things to be looking for in your child's backpack/Communication Envelope:

Conference Appt. Form - please return the slip in your child's Communication Envelope by Wednesday, Nov. 9th.
Students who missed only one or no spelling words and will not have to taking the Spelling Post Test on Thursday (not Friday - no school Friday, Nov. 11th) are: Alexa, Mikayla, Ryann and Elizabeth - Way to go!
Veteran's Day Assembly Thursday, Nov. 10th at 9:10 a.m. 4th Graders are reciting The American's Creed.
Operation Christmas Child brochures were sent home earlier this week. Please send in any items you wish to donate by next Tuesday, Nov. 15th.

Graded papers from the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 4 will be sent home by the end of this week. This week's papers from Nov. 7-10 will be sent home next week and will be entered into the 2nd Quarter online gradebook on Engrade (GP2 for Grading Period 2) by the end of this coming weekend. Contact me if you need assistance checking your child's grades online.
Next week I will send home information for our "Thanksgiving-themed snacks" class party - please sign up for one or more items if you are able to send in any items from the list that will be sent home next week, for the class party.

We are coming up to the end of the 1st Quarter of school by the end of this week! Report cards will be given to parents at your child's conference. I will send home information about conferences by next week for you to check your schedule and get back to me on the time and day to meet for a conference. If you are not able to meet during conference week afternoons please contact me and we can arrange to meet before or after school some other day. Graded papers for the week of Oct. 24-28 will be sent home by the end of this week and graded papers for this week of Oct. 31 - Nov. 4 will be sent home next week. Coming up Thursday, Friday, next week, and later in November:

A science homework page: "Backyard Detective 5" was sent home with your child Wednesday, November 2nd. Please help your child check off a few plants that they find in your yard or nearby and return it by Monday, Nov.7th.
We will have our Spelling List 8 Post-Test on Thursday, Nov. 3rd instead of Friday since it is a half-day on Friday and we have other activities that day. The following students only missed one or no spelling words and will not have to take the Post-Test: Daniel, Alexa, Ethan, Ryann and Elizabeth. Way to go!
Thursday, Nov. 3rd, we will have a craft taught to the class for art, by Mrs. Miller. The students are looking forward to it. Thank you Mrs. Miller!
Friday, Nov. 4th, is a half-day, morning only, no school in the afternoon and no lunch that day. Please have your child bring a snack for Friday that they can eat during our regular snack time during the mid-morning. We will also have a "Pajama Day and Ice Cream Bar Day" to celebrate all the students in our class reaching 100% of their AR Goal for 1st Quarter! Students can wear pajamas (pjs need to cover all areas as regular dress clothes would and be long pants - not shorts), as well as robes and slippers, and students are allowed to bring a stuffed animal but not blankets. I will bring in ice cream bars, frozen fudge bars and popsicles to give students a choice of treat to eat while we watch a Veggie Tales movie before we dismiss for our half-day. We will do morning work and also have SSR (sustained silent reading time), before we watch a short movie. Congratulations to all students for reaching their AR Goals!
Next week on Thursday, Nov. 10th, at 9:15 a.m. we will attend the school's Veteran's Day Assembly. Students will recite a pledge they have learned and a local military color guard will be present. If you would like to join us for the assembly we would look forward to having you attend!
There is no school on Friday, Nov. 11th.
Tuesday, Nov. 15th we will be putting together a shoebox in our classroom for Operation Christmas Child. I will send home an informational pamphlet and a list next week of suggested items that your child can bring in if you are able to participate. We will put together 1-2 boxes depending on how many items are brought in. You may also choose to do a shoebox as a family and bring it in to the school before or by Nov. 15th.
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Nov. 16th-18th are half-days for school conferences - no school in the afternoons on those days and no lunches those days. Please have your child bring a snack for each of those days that they can eat during our regular snack time during the mid-morning.
Wednesday, November 23rd, the day before we leave school for Thanksgiving Break, we will have a class party to celebrate Thanksgiving, before we dismiss on that school day. If you would like to help volunteer please contact me at: evcs4@yahoo.com or call the school and leave a message and I will get back to you. The party will include snacks similar to the pilgrim's first Thanksgiving celebrated "modern-style" such as: popcorn, apple slices or other fruit, apple or other type of juice, some type of "turkey" or other jerky, and anything else that is simple yet similar to Thanksgiving food. I will send home a list of food items before then for students to bring in before that day. We will also watch a Thanksgiving movie and do a word search or other type of craft or activity before we dismiss that day. I am very thankful for each student and their family!
There is no school on Thursday or Friday, Nov. 24th and 25th.
With so many days that we don't have school or have half-days this month it is challenging to get the time in for the required curriculum. If you need to schedule appts. for your child, please try to schedule after school or as close to the end of the school day if at all possible so they don't miss out on class instruction time.
Your student's grades should be up-to-date by this weekend for all work they have turned in and that I have graded so far for 1st Quarter. If you need assistance to access your child's grade online on Engrade please contact me.

Week of Oct. 24-28, 2011

Wow - we're already in the last week of October! Students have been busy with several tests in science, language, history and math last week and this week. We are progressing through our curriculum, learning how to take notes and use study guides/notes to assist with tests in science and history, and workbook pages in math and language to assist with tests. In reading and Bible students are continuing to read short stories and do comprehension questions. They are also keeping up with weekly spelling assignments and tests and penmanship drills. Art has focused on colored pencil illustration and we have a "bookworm" bookmark project Mrs. Miller will teach us soon. On Tuesday, October 25th, our class will experience a visit from the traveling farm of the Puyallup Fair here at EVCS! It's also "Western Day" on Tuesday so students can dress up in western attire and we will have a Dutch oven treat made for us by Mr. Hill. Yee Haw!

Homework in Science: Activity Sheet 14 - Backyard Detective 4 - Due on Thursday, Oct. 27th. If your child can check off just a few items that is fine.
Your child is working on an essay, "What is an American" - an essay that may be submitted to the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. It must not go over 250 words and I have given a minimum of 100 words for their essay. The essay can be hand written or typed. Students should turn in their rough draft by Tues., Oct. 25th or Wed., Oct. 26th. I will look the essays over and only do corrections for grammar and spelling and then return to students to redo and return with their final draft by Thursday, October 27th. The final drafts should not have anything on it that shows their name, school or city. Students can bring in their essay and I will complete the information form for their essay before submitting it. We have talked about themes such as the freedom to worship, vote, assemble, of the press, the American spirit of hard work, inventions, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, fair representation, and other themes from our history books on what an American is and what America stands for.
Congratulations to all the 4th/5th Graders for reaching 100% or more of their AR Goal for 1st Quarter! We will celebrate soon with an ice cream bar treat that I will bring in for the class! Keep up the good work!
The following students missed only one or no words on the List 7 Spelling Pre-Test and won't have to take the Friday Spelling List 7 Post-Test: Daniel, Ryann, Elizabeth, Braden, Kohlten, and Alexa - Way to go! It's the middle of October already, with cooler fall weather - time for coats and warm shoes! I've included some pictures of the Schilter's Farm Pumpkin Patch field trip and some other pictures below - enjoy! Here's what's happening this week:

On Tuesday morning students meet together for Big Brothers/Big Sisters - older grade students paired up with younger grade students. What a great way to build relationships and teach responsibility and mentorship!
Students also have their first science test Mon.-Tues. (or Tues.-Wed.) of this week. For the science test students may use their study guide and notes - bring them back to school from studying over this past weekend. The Activity Sheet 8 Backyard Detective 3 that was sent with your child as homework is due Monday, Oct. 17th. If just a few items are checked that is fine - not every insect is in this area or active during this season.
For 4th Graders the next history test is also coming up on Monday of next week. A study guide with notes will be coming home by the end of this week for students to study and bring back with them to school to use when taking the test.
The next math test for 4th and 5th graders will be next Monday as well, and the next language test will be the end of this week. Students will be able to use their math and language workbook pages for those tests.
Students are in a routine now and doing well with heading papers, turning in assignments regularly, and getting used to the curriculum at the 4th and 5th grade levels. If you need assistance checking grades online using Engrade, please let me know.
The following students missed only one word or didn't miss any on their List 6 spelling pre-test this Monday, and won't have to take the post-test on Friday: Kohlten, Braden, Elizabeth, Ryann, and Justin. Way to go!
If you haven't had a chance to send in your child's emergency bag, please send it in as soon as possible. Check with the office if you need a list of items to include in the bag.
Please sign and return your child's mid-term report if you still have it at home - thank you!
Our magazine/candy fundraiser continues through Oct. 26th. Please send in any orders your child has as soon as possible. The school has incentives including a root beer float this Monday for those who sell at least 6 items! Students who sell at least 10 items by this Friday will have milk and cookies with Mrs. Ballou! Congrats to: Ryann, Elizabeth, Mikayla, Adam, Bailey and Justin!
Our class is going to research and represent Norway for country days later this spring. I will give your child ideas for what they can do to help for this project, yet if you have any ideas or any items you would be willing to donate for decorating our classroom, please contact me.
For the spring auction our class will put together a basket with an entertainment theme. I have a contact with the Lakewood Playhouse and will be procuring tickets from them soon for the basket. We need more "entertainment-themed" items. If you have any ideas for additional entertainment items to also include in our class basket, please contact me.

Week of Oct. 10-14, 2011

The class field trip to Schilter's Farm Pumpkin Patch was Wednesday, October 12th. We were blessed with a beautiful day and no "liquid sunshine!" A big thank you to all the parent drivers who drove (as well as to those who drove for our Sept. field trip to Lattin's Cider Mill) - couldn't do it without each of you! We had fun taking our class pictures on the giant haybale stack, eating a picnic lunch, going through the haymaze, checking out the animals in the petting zoo, riding in the tractor-pulled covered wagon, picking a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, playing on the playground, and some purchased goodies at the country store...lots to do at Schilter's Farm!

Upcoming tests, homework, and fundraising:

This week we are also wrapping up Chapter 2 in Science - learning all about insects! Our first science test will be the early part of next week, over two days, Monday-Tuesday or Tuesday-Wednesday. We are wrapping up several activity pages to go with the reading and comprehension questions this week and possibly on Monday. A study guide will be sent home by Friday to study for the test. Students will be able to use their notes. Notes will be sent home before the test to study - then bring notes back to school to use while taking the test.
For 4th Graders, the next History test will be coming up soon - the middle to end of next week. A study guide will be sent home beforehand.
Your child has a science homework worksheet page - Backyard Detective 3 - for science coming home on Thursday, Oct. 13th, which is due back to school on Monday, October 17th. If your child can identify and check off just a few insects on the worksheet that is fine.
Please sign your child's planner every night, and return it along with your child's communication envelope daily. Papers for the week of Oct. 3-7, will be sent home by the end of this week. Check your child's grades online at the Engrade website using the access code sent home previously after you have logged on and created your own user id and password. Contact me if you need assistance with Engrade.
If you haven't had a chance to send in an Emergency Supplies Bag for your child, please send it as soon as possible so your child has snacks and other supplies if needed in an emergency.
An envelope with information for the magazine/chocolate order fund drive was sent home on Monday with students. Please help your child as they consider asking family and relatives, friends, neighbors, your co-workers, etc., to order items which will help Eagle View Christian School, and also help your child win prizes. We also have the opportunity to win a class stuffed animal - "Moolah the Cow" for our classroom!
Students who turn in their reading log with a parent signature at the end of each month earn an item out of the class prize bag.
We are also working towards a class ice cream party for those who reach 100% or more of their AR Goal for the quarter.

October and the autumn weather is here! Information to highlight for this week:

Picture Day for Class & Individual Pictures is Tuesday, October 4th, 2011. Please send your child's picture order envelope in the morning on Tuesday if you wish to order portraits.
This week on Thursday and Friday, October 6th & 7th, we will be eating lunch in the classroom as the lunchroom will be used for the Daycare pictures on those days. Please send lunches that don't have to be heated up with your child on those days, such as a sandwich, salad, or cheese and crackers.
We are looking forward to our fieldtrip next week, Wednesday, October 12th, to Schilter's Pumpkin Patch! A fieldtrip permission slip form will be sent home this week for parent/guardian signature and medical insurance information. Please send it back to school with your child by the end of this week. More information on the cost per student and any accompanying siblings will be sent home soon. Please indicate if you're able to drive/chaperone for the fieldtrip.
This week graded papers from last week will be sent home. The first tests your child has taken in Math, Language (Grammar), and for 4th graders - in 4th Gr. History, will be included in those papers coming home this week. Students were given opportunities to do some of those tests in sections over different times/days, and to also "self-correct" some of their answers after I had initially gone over the tests. This opportunity was to help them become familiar with the tests and what is required at the 4th or 5th grade level in the curriculum.
Mrs. Rivard will have the 5th Graders take their next history test over two days beginning this Friday, Oct. 7th and finishing it on Monday, Oct. 10th.
For Science homework, a worksheet, "Backyard Detective 2," was sent home Monday, Oct. 3rd, for your child to "check off" any insects that they find in their yard. If they can check off just a few, that is fine. The worksheet is due back in class on Wednesday, Oct. 5th.
Mid-term Reports for first quarter will be sent home soon. You can check your child's grades that have been entered so far, on Engrade, my online gradebook.
An October Reading Log was given to your child for this month to keep track of their reading at home (the goal is 30 minutes a day if possible). At the end of each month, if your child brings in their reading log with a parent signature they can choose a prize from the "prize bag" - some have already turned in their September reading logs and picked out their prize!
Students are also taking AR tests and many have already reached 100% of their goal for the first quarter!

Students who received 100% or missed only one on the Spelling List 4 Pre-Test Monday, Oct. 3rd, will not have to take the Post-Test on Friday, Oct. 7th. Those students are: Ethan, Ryann, Elizabeth, Kohlten, Alexa, Daniel, and Bailey. Way to go!

This week students are gearing up for See You At The Pole on Wednesday, September 28th, at 8:30 a.m., where we will gather around the flagpole at school to pray. It's so wonderful to be able to do this during the school day at Eagle View Christian School! Thank you parents and guardians for all that you do including bringing your child here to school!

CORRECTION: Next Week on Thursday, Oct. 6th and Friday, Oct. 7th, [NOT THIS WEEK] -students will eat lunch in the classroom as the Daycare is using the lunchroom to take their school pictures. Please pack food items that do not need to be heated up if at all possible.

Hopefully you have been able to log onto Engrade, my online gradebook, to see your child's grades.

Remember the discount card fundraiser which ends this Friday. If you already bought a card, let the office know you want "credit" to go toward your child's classroom - the class that sells the most discount cards wins a pizza party!

We will have school pictures coming up in early October - check your child's Communication Envelope or see Lora or Kim in the office for a picture order form. Please initial your child's planner each day to see assignments or other information, and please have your child bring their planner and their Communication Envelope back and forth to school each day. We also have a fieldtrip coming up the middle of October, to the Pumpkin Patch - more information will be coming.

Congratulations to the following students who either received 100% or only missed one spelling word on their Spelling List 3 Pre-Test today (Monday, Sept. 26th), which means they won't have to take the Post-Test this coming Friday: Ethan, Kohlten, Alexa, Ryann, and Elizabeth. Great Job! Many of the students have also received 100% or only missed a few spelling words on the Spelling Post-Tests they've taken recently. Keep up the good work everyone!

Progress Reports with papers of graded work so far will be coming home with your child this week. I hope to get information to you soon on how you can access your child's grades and assignments online. Your child has been busy doing in-class assignments, and getting into the school routine. I have been enjoying reading the "Letter to Mrs. Nylander" assignment and the All About Me posters students have recently written and illustrated. Very creative writers and artists!

Please check your child's planner daily to see any homework assignments or projects for the day or week, including reading 30 minutes a day. This week students visit the library and will check out books they can read in school and at home to work towards reaching their AR goals. The following students received 100% or only missed one word on their Monday Spelling Pre-Test so will not need to take the Spelling Post-Test on Friday: Alexa, Kohlten, Ryann, and Elizabeth - way to go! Our class "country" for Country Days in the spring will be Norway. We will be doing research, decorating the classroom, doing displays, making food, etc., on Norway.

We are getting "into the groove" with all our subjects, including PE and chapel. Wednesday, Sept. 14th, we went to Lattin's Cider Mill on our class fieldtrip along with Mrs. Seiler's 6th Grade class. We enjoyed tasting several flavored ciders, ate fresh doughnuts, walked around and fed farm animals, rode on the tractor-pulled "animal train" and enjoyed time outside! In class we are reading chapter books and working on writing summaries. 4th Graders are reading Charlotte's Web and 5th Graders are reading Sounder. As students finish their books they will write their summaries. Since these are AR books, they will soon be able to take an AR test on their book. Next week the school libary will open and students will check out additional books that they can take home. Please encourage your child to read and record their 30 minutes a day on their Reading Log. Please also initial your child's planner daily. Most days they will have something written on it as far as what we did in class or homework and they will always have 30 minutes of reading daily. The Spelling Post Test for List 1 is this Friday. Students who received 100% or missed only one word on their Pre Test done this Monday, will not have to take this Friday's Spelling Post Test. Those students are: Alexa, Elizabeth, Ryann, Kohlten, Ethan, and Braden. Great Job!

Friday, Sept. 9th, 2011

Welcome 4th/5th Grade Families,

We have been learning procedures and beginning lessons this first week of school. Student assignments and activities this week include all of the following: penmanship, math, history, language, spelling, science, reading, Bible, chapel and art. Most of their daily work is done in class. The homework this week is the following:

Daily reading (the goal is 30 minutes a day outside of the school day). Students were given Reading Log to track their daily reading.
Any unfinished in-class work is sent home as homework.
On Sept. 8th, students brought home an observation sheet - Activity Sheet 1 - for Science to work on after school - students have a "check-list" to check off if they observe various types of insects, animals, plants, etc., in their yard. The goal was to check off what they observe - it may be only a few items. If your child didn't get that done, they can work on it over the weekend and bring it back to school on Monday, Sept. 12th.
Spelling List 1 was given to students to study for a pre-test on Monday, Sept. 12th and a post-test on Friday, Sept. 17th.
Spelling words are to be printed twice on notebook paper and turned in by Wednesday, Sept. 14th.
Students received an assignment on Open House night and/or the first day of school to "write me a letter" - this is a way for me to get to know your child and see their writing skills. This assignment is due on Monday, Sept. 12th.
Upcoming Field Trip: Wednesday, Sept. 14th to Lattin's Cider Mill with the 6th grade class. A half-sheet note was sent home on Thurs., Sept. 8th which explains the cost of $6.00 per student as well as a place to indicate if you are able to drive and be a chaperone for the fieldtrip.
Mrs. Rivard is our Team Teacher who helps with our class in the mornings teaching 5th Grade History and also assisting some mornings with 5th Grade Math and Language. We are so glad to have her in our classroom!
